QUESTIONS

I put together a list of questions that clients tend to ask.  Please, get in touch if you do not see the answer that you are looking for and I will do my best to answer you promptly.

What type of clients do you see?

I have worked with all age groups (adolescence to old age) , as well as couples and families.  It is very rewarding to see the growth and the empowerment that clients achieve through their work in therapy as well as physical activity, hobbies, medication (after consultation with a psychiatrist) and social interaction.  As I specialize in trauma, I have noticed that our overall mental and physical health, family history such as intergenerational trauma, impact how we process traumatic events and achieve sooner or later a "new normal."

How does a therapy session look like?

A therapy session is a space for trust and shared understanding.  After an initial 15 minute consultation we can decide if we are a good fit as "running mates." I usually begin with the "what brings you here" question.  However, it is important to follow your lead and pace.  No two people are alike and you are the expert of yourself.  I look at you as the host of your universe.  And,  I see my role as someone who helps shed light.

What happens during therapy ?

Therapy is "a meeting of the minds."  We follow your goals and priorities to figure out a possibly better course of action, identify patterns that may no longer work and sometimes "re-boot" how you relate to your context.  I see the space of therapy filled with opportunity for mutual change.  I am enriched by each client in unique ways as they open a window for me to look into their universe.

How does the initial session look like ?

The initial session is about the reasons that bring you, asking questions to find out goals and how to best reach them in the time ahead.

What is your favourite type of therapy ?

It depends on your goals; I generally see a lot of value in helping clients understand how specific problems came to be.  I also appreciate the benefits of including mindfulness in any therapy session.  Clients who have patterns of negative thinking or tend to be absorbed by fear, may also benefit from cognitive behavior therapy.  Looking at therapy interventions from an eclectic angle, I am able to tailor my work according to my clients' needs.  With clients that have experienced one or more traumatic events, I offer EMDR therapy alongside talk therapy.

Does therapy require homework ?

While therapy does not involve formal "homework," ideally leaves us both with questions.  Between sessions we may quietly be thinking about what came up during the session and what to cover next.  Depending on the presenting issue, for example, if you find that you are preoccupied, say, negative thinking, I may ask you to monitor when you are more likely to think along these lines, etc.

How will i know whether you are the right therapist for me ?

Trust yourself;  during our free 15 minute consultation, ask yourself:  Is Angeliki someone I would like to talk to about my concerns?  You may also want to ask me about how I would work with you on your specific or broader goals.  Also, if I feel that you might benefit  more, depending on how you feel about the reason that brings in, I may suggest another expert for you.

Usually, how many sessions are enough ?

The length of therapy depends on the client's goals.  One question I like to ask is:  how will you know that you have achieved your goals in therapy?

What is your license ?

I am an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT). I am working under the license of Matthew Shima, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).  Working under someone's license means that I have weekly meetings where I and other therapists share with our supervisor questions and perspectives about different challenges of of the day to day therapy work.

Is the process confidential ?

Absolutely, with two exceptions; if you plan harming yourself or others. Therapists are bound by the law to safeguard client privacy of their clients.

Can i reach you through social media ?

Confidentiality is best served via text and/or a phone call.  Therapy requires privacy.

Do you see your clients in person, or, online ?

Currently, I am seeing my clients online.  This may change in the future.  However, the online space allows me to see clients from across Los Angeles and beyond.  Not having to spend time in traffic is a very appealing proposition for most.

Your policy for missing sessions ?

I follow the 24 hour standard.  You may cancel your session at no charge 24 hours before the meeting time.
